Why Hand-Stitched Leather Still Matters

Loom & Margaux

With my curiosity about leather crafts in general, I remember wondering why these crafters always used two needles. That is when I discovered saddle stitching and its incredible durability, a technique worth prioritizing, especially in luxury leather goods.

While machines offer speed and efficiency, I found myself drawn to the slow, intentional craft of hand stitching. I knew it would not be easy, but I began practicing deliberately. At first, it was slow and exacting. I learned from several experienced leather crafters, picking up techniques and subtle tricks along the way. Over time, I became so comfortable with hand stitching that it became a meditation, a way to connect deeply with the material.

Understanding Saddle Stitching and Backstitching

Saddle stitching is a traditional hand-sewing method in leathercraft where two needles pass through each hole from opposite sides. Each stitch locks independently, creating a seam that is extremely durable. This interlocking structure is difficult to replicate by any other method, which is why it is often chosen for pieces meant to last a lifetime.

Backstitching reinforces seams by doubling back over previous stitches, especially in areas that will experience extra stress. Together, these techniques create resilient seams that are both functional and beautiful.

Waxed threads resist fraying and snapping, provide extra grip, and keep seams tight for decades. Combined with careful handwork, they produce reliable, long-lasting seams with subtle beauty.

Why It Is Worth It

Leather goods have long been symbols of heritage, quality, and craftsmanship.

The care and precision in hand stitching, combined with the finest leathers and materials, make every piece unique, durable, and full of character. This craft allows both the materials and the techniques to shine, resulting in a product that grows with you, carrying your stories and memories.

Holding a hand-stitched journal, feeling its weight, and noticing the subtle details, you can sense the expertise, intention, and quality of every material that went into it. That quiet attention to both materials and technique is what makes hand-stitched leather truly timeless.

The Art of Quiet Luxury

At Loom and Margaux, hand stitching is paired with the finest leathers in the world. This is the essence of the art of quiet luxury, where craftsmanship and material exist in perfect harmony. Just as the type of leather, the techniques, and the materials are as valuable as the words we write and the moments worth remembering, we honor the very reason we choose quality and true craftsmanship.
