A simple guide to understanding the material behind every Loom and Margaux piece.

What Makes Leather Special

Leather is a natural material; no two pieces are alike. It softens, deepens in color, and develops a beautiful patina the more you use it.

Types of Leather

  • Full-Grain: Highest quality, strongest, ages best. This is what we use.

  • Top-Grain: Sanded for smoothness, slightly less durable.

  • Genuine Leather: Lower-grade layers of hide, more affordable.

  • Bonded Leather: Scraps mixed with glue, least durable.

Vegetable-Tanned vs Chrome-Tanned

  • Vegetable-Tanned: Natural, eco-conscious, ages beautifully, firm yet flexible. Our journals use certified Italian veg-tan leather.

  • Chrome-Tanned: Chemically processed, softer, cheaper, ages less dramatically.

Why Vegetable-Tanned Italian Leather Is Special

Vegetable tanned Italian leather is special because it ages gracefully, allowing your journal to become uniquely yours. It has a natural finish with no plastic coating, is crafted through a sustainable tanning process, and carries an incredible clean, warm, earthy scent. It is durable without being heavy and is designed to last for decades rather than years. This is why your Loom and Margaux journal looks better the more you use it.

Leather Characteristics

Natural Marks
Because it’s real leather, you may notice tiny scars, grain variations, subtle wrinkles, or differences in color depth. These are not defects, they are a sign of authenticity.

Patina
Over time, the leather will darken, soften, develop a natural sheen, and become smoother. It evolves with your life, reflecting your touch, habits, and story.

Leather Care Basics

  • Avoid soaking it in water

  • Let it dry naturally if it gets wet

  • Keep away from harsh chemicals

  • Condition occasionally to maintain suppleness

  • Store in a fabric pouch when not in use (optional but nice)

Why Leather Matters for Journals
Leather is strong enough to protect your inserts while remaining flexible enough to open flat. It develops emotional value over time, looks even better the more you carry it, and feels luxurious in your hand.
